How to Re-Acquire danish citizenship – Transitional scheme for former danish citizens without residence requirements

If you once held Danish citizenship – but lost it because you acquired a foreign nationality before 1 September 2015 – there is now a limited window of opportunity for you to re-acquire Danish citizenship by declaration. This transitional scheme is available from 1 July 2021 until 30 June 2026.

At VisaGuiden we specialise in assisting former Danish citizens living abroad, guiding you through documentation, declaration form, and all requirements.

Who is this scheme for?

  • You were formerly a Danish citizen.
  • You lost your Danish citizenship under the former § 7 of the Danish Nationality Act, by acquiring a foreign citizenship before 1 September 2015.
  • You do not meet the usual residence or physical presence requirements for re-acquisition by declaration – but you can use the transitional scheme.
  • You have not been sentenced to an unconditional prison sentence between the loss of Danish citizenship and the declaration date.
  • If you are over 22, born abroad, and no decision was made under § 8 before your 22nd birthday, you must have either had residence in Denmark before age 22 for at least 3 months or had altogether at least 1 year of stays in Denmark.

How VisaGuiden can assist you

For former Danish citizens who lost their nationality by acquiring a foreign one before 1 September 2015, this transitional scheme offers a rare and valuable chance to regain Danish citizenship even without fulfilling residence requirements. At VisaGuiden we help you prepare your declaration, compile your documentation and guide you through the process. Act soon, as the deadline of 30 June 2026 is fixed and the clock is ticking.
