New Rules Make Family Reunification in Denmark Easier
New rules for family reunification came into effect on July 1, 2024, making it easier for couples to reunite in Denmark. The changes primarily concern the language requirements for the residing spouse and the financial security requirements.
Relaxed language requirements
Previously, the residing spouse had to pass the Danish language test "Prøve i Dansk 3" to fulfill the integration requirement. With the new rules, this requirement can also be met by documenting 5 years of ordinary full-time employment in Denmark with significant communication in Danish.

What does "significant communication in Danish" mean?
It means that in your work, you have had frequent written and oral contact in Danish with Danish-speaking individuals for a significant part of the workday. This could include communication with:
- Colleagues
- Citizens
- Business partners
- Customers
- Patients
How is the "significant communication" requirement assessed?
The Danish Immigration Service makes a specific assessment based on several factors:
- Self-reporting: You must report the extent of your Danish communication at work.
- Documentation: You must document your employment with, for example, an employment contract and payslips.
- Income Register: The Immigration Service cross-references your information with the income register.
- Further investigation: In cases of doubt, the Immigration Service may require further documentation, such as a statement from your employer, or conduct a telephone interview with you to assess your Danish language skills.
- Examples:
- If you have worked in a position with frequent Danish communication, such as a caseworker, the requirement will usually be met.
- If you have worked in a company with English as the primary working language, or have had limited contact with Danish speakers, the requirement will likely not be met.
- Work in the restaurant industry or on construction sites: If you have worked as a waiter or craftsman, where there may be doubt about the extent of Danish communication, the Immigration Service may require a statement from your employer to clarify this.
Who do the new rules apply to?
The new rules apply to applications submitted from July 1, 2024, onwards. In some cases, they also apply to applications submitted before this date.
